One of the major responsibilities of employers is to control or eliminate health and safety risks. They must see to it that workers are informed and trained properly about this matter. Plus, they must consult representatives about the implementation of countermeasures.

You’re Obligated Too

At the same time, you have to be aware of your responsibilities as part of the team. Considering managers or employers can’t guarantee your safety on their own. Take note that you should have wide knowledge about occupational rules and guidelines, especially those that apply to your industry. And these include expertise in your job and in proper handling of equipment or machines—if this applies. Most importantly, you have to work closely with the higher ups when identifying hazards and finding solutions.

Essentially, employers are in charge of these tasks. They, then, require your participation. You have to do your part by preventing accidents or injuries from happening. You have to make sure no harm happens.

Know Your Responsibilities

Occupational laws state that you have to be consulted, informed, trained and instructed. You also have to participate fully, and this involves helping make decisions. Generally, the process is two-way, the entire workforce and the management has to:

  • Discuss and listen to issues, concerns, views
  • Look for solutions and decide as a team
  • Comply with the guidelines together

In line with this, determine what you can do to promote good health and minimise hazards. And this goes beyond following the implemented measures.

1. Minimise habits that could affect the work environment.

Fond of smoking? It doesn’t just affect you, it also affects people around you due to second-hand smoke. It could also lead to fire breakout, especially if your work involves handling flammable materials and substances.

If you find it hard to quit, switch to alternatives. Flavoured e-liquid with less nicotine is a good option. It provides the same satisfaction as tobacco smoking but without the harmful chemicals. The liquid produces vapour; hence, the smoke. This means you or other workers aren’t inhaling toxic fumes.

2. Stay informed

You can’t learn everything from company guidelines; it pays to read up on occupational health and safety. Check out resources related to your industry and compare notes. You might just find some details not found in the handbook.

Ask about latest trainings as well, particularly about the latest equipment acquired. You may not use the machines or tools right away, but you’d want to be adept when that time comes.
